McCall Business License: $140 City Registration and Two Layers of Local Option Tax

If you plan to open or run a business in McCall, Idaho, the state filing is only the first step. McCall requires its own general city business license. Because McCall is a resort city, it also applies a local option tax (LOT) to retail sales and to overnight lodging. This guide covers what to gather, the order to file in, and the numbers you need for a mccall idaho business license and the taxes that come with it. This is informational content, not legal or tax advice.

What Idaho Licenses, and What It Does Not

Idaho does not have a state business license. Business.idaho.gov puts it plainly: registering your business is a registration, not a license. Counties do not issue a general business license either, so local licensing comes from the city. Some professions are licensed by state boards. Contractors register with the Idaho Contractors Board at DOPL, because Idaho has no statewide general contractor license. The Business Wizard at business.idaho.gov generates a checklist of the agencies and permits your specific activity needs.

Materials and Information to Gather

  • Your exact legal business name, including the required entity wording (LLC, L.L.C., LC or L.C.)
  • Your formation document, if you already have one: a Certificate of Organization for an LLC or Articles of Incorporation for a corporation
  • An Idaho street address for your registered agent (P.O. boxes are not accepted)
  • A written list of what you will sell or do, and whether it happens inside McCall city limits
  • Your federal EIN, if you have one
  • For a rental: the property address, the number of units, and your lodging tax plan
  • A payment method for the state filing fee and the city fee
  • Contact numbers for McCall City Hall and the LOT administrator at 208-634-8520

Step 1: Form or Register Your Entity With the Secretary of State

If you are forming an LLC, file the Certificate of Organization (Limited Liability Company) through SOSBiz at sosbiz.idaho.gov/forms/business/. The filing fee is $100 online and $120 on paper. Business filings are processed in about 7 to 10 days. Expedited service is available for a $40 surcharge (evidence of filing within 8 working hours) or a $100 surcharge (same day service on filings submitted before 1:00 p.m. Mountain time).

Your LLC name must contain "limited liability company," "limited company," "LLC," "L.L.C.," "LC" or "L.C." "Ltd." and "Co." are acceptable abbreviations. Search the name in the SOSBiz business search before you file. The name must be distinguishable from existing, reserved and registered names, and it may not imply government affiliation.

Corporations file Articles of Incorporation (General Business) with a $100 filing fee.

Every entity must keep a registered agent in Idaho with a physical street address that is available during business hours. You can act as your own agent if you use an Idaho address. An assumed business name cannot serve as your registered agent.

Tip: Write down the exact name as it appears on your filed document. The city registration should match it.

Step 2: File an Assumed Business Name Only If You Trade Under Another Name

If you operate under a name other than your legal name, file a Certificate of Assumed Business Name (the Idaho DBA) with the Idaho Secretary of State. It is filed statewide, not with the county. The fee is $25 online or $45 on paper, which includes a $20 manual data entry surcharge. An assumed business name stays active until you cancel it and is not subject to renewal. If you want to hold a name first, a name reservation costs $20 and lasts 120 days. Forms are at sos.idaho.gov/business-forms/.

Step 3: Confirm Your City of McCall Registration

McCall requires a general city business license. The initial fee is $140 and the renewal fee is $70. Licenses expire December 31, and renewal is due by January 31, according to the city's business registration page as of 2026. Confirm the current fee with City Hall before you pay, because city pages can change.

When you call, ask three questions:

  1. Does my activity need the general registration, a license for a specific activity, or both?
  2. Should the registration show my entity name, my assumed business name, or both?
  3. Is my location inside city limits?

Common mistake: Assuming that a state filing or a county license covers you. Idaho issues neither a state general business license nor a county general business license.

Step 4: Register for Sales Tax and the 1% Retail LOT

Idaho's state sales tax rate is 6%. Local sales tax applies only in voter-approved resort cities. McCall is one of them under Idaho Code 50-1044 to 50-1047, where voters approved the local option tax by a 60% majority. The retail portion of the LOT is 1%. Groceries and motor vehicles are excluded.

Register for a sales tax permit through the sales tax permit page at tax.idaho.gov/ibr, and see the Idaho State Tax Commission at tax.idaho.gov. Ask the Commission how the 1% LOT appears on your returns and what your combined rate should be on taxable sales.

Step 5: Add Lodging Taxes If You Rent Overnight

If you rent rooms or units for overnight stays, you may owe several lodging taxes:

  • 3% streets LOT under City Code Title 4, Chapter 11, effective January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2036.
  • 3% lodging grant tax under City Code Title 4, Chapter 12.
  • Mountain Community Center District lodging tax of 5% according to the district. The Idaho Tax Commission administers this tax from June 1, 2026. Confirm whether your property sits inside the district.

The city's LOT page states the lodging total two different ways, as 7% in one answer and 8% in another. Do not quote either figure to guests. Call the LOT administrator at 208-634-8520 and ask for the exact lodging rate that applies to your property.

Step 6: Check the Short-Term Rental Rules

Idaho Code 67-6539, as amended by HB 583 and effective July 1, 2026, bars cities and counties from requiring any license, fee, permit or registration for a short-term rental. State and local lodging taxes still apply. The McCall LOT page still tells short-term rental owners to keep an active business license, so that line may be outdated. Ask City Hall in writing whether you still need the general registration before you pay the $140 or renew.

Common mistake: Stopping lodging tax filings because you no longer believe a city license is required. The lodging taxes are separate obligations.

Step 7: Plan Ahead for Food Businesses

Central District Health regulates food businesses in this area. Contact the district before you sign a lease or buy equipment, and confirm what it requires for your menu, prep area and service style. Its requirements are separate from the city registration.

Step 8: Track Your Recurring Deadlines

ItemAmountTiming
LLC Certificate of Organization$100 online, $120 on paperOne time, about 7 to 10 days to process
Assumed business name (DBA)$25 online, $45 on paperOne time, active until canceled
Name reservation$20Holds the name for 120 days
McCall general business license$140 initial, $70 renewalExpires December 31; renew by January 31
Secretary of State annual reportNo feeEvery year, before the end of the month the entity was formed, starting one year after formation
Idaho income taxFlat 5.3%Annual personal or business return

An LLC is a pass-through entity by default, so members report Idaho income on their personal returns at the flat 5.3% rate. An LLC that files a partnership or S corporation return owes a $10 permanent building fund tax per owner for whom the entity pays Idaho tax. An LLC taxed as a C corporation pays the 5.3% business income tax plus the $10 permanent building fund tax. Ask a CPA which classification fits your situation.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Filing your DBA with the county. The Idaho Secretary of State handles it.
  • Paying the $140 city fee without confirming the current amount with City Hall.
  • Quoting a single lodging tax total to guests when the city's own pages disagree.
  • Using a P.O. box as your registered agent address.
  • Using an assumed business name as your registered agent.
  • Skipping the annual report because it has no fee. It is still required.

Expected Results

If you complete these steps in order, you should have an entity on the Secretary of State's records, a current City of McCall registration, a sales tax permit if you sell taxable goods, and lodging tax registration if you rent overnight. Your results may differ depending on your activity, location and tax classification, and some fees or rates may change. Calling City Hall and the LOT administrator before you file usually prevents the most common delays.
